Guests:
Jerry Kaplan is widely known in the computer industry as a serial entrepreneur, technical innovator, author, and futurist. Kaplan may be best know for his key role in defining the tablet computer industry as founder of GO Corporation in 1987. Two decades before the iPad, Kaplan foresaw that computers could take a different form than the then-ubiquitous desktop PCs and he envisioned a new kind of computer that would be used like a ‘tablet of paper’, with a touch-sensitive screen. Many of GO’s concepts were ultimately incorporated into other early portable computers such as the Palm Pilot, The Apple Newton, and most recently, IOS products like Apple’s iPad.
In 1994 Kaplan wrote a best-selling non-fiction novel entitled Startup–A Silicon Valley Adventure about his entrepreneurial experiences. Startup was selected by Business Week as one of the top ten business books of the year, was optioned to Sony Pictures, and is available in Japanese, Chinese, and Portuguese.
Kaplan holds an MSE (1975) and PhD (1979) in Computer and Information Science, specializing in Artificial Intelligence from the University of Pennsylvania, and a BA (1972) in History and Philosophy of Science from the University of Chicago. Kaplan is currently a Fellow at The Center for Legal Informatics at the Stanford University Law School. He also teaches Philosophy, Ethics, and Impact of Artificial Intelligence as a Visiting Lecturer in the Computer Science Department at Stanford University.
